What a great time to be seeing bands in LA!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1134969481939975509.post-44275706391209109652022-09-02T23:17:00.559-04:002022-09-02T23:17:00.559-04:00I was looking for information on the ON Club (how ...I was looking for information on the ON Club (how I looked it up). It must have just opened the few times I went there in 1980. I had a friend (both 27 at the time) who lived a few miles from it and we went there one night. The Box Boys and a reggae band (Steel Pulse?) were playing. We both liked rock from the 60s-70s, but had gotten into punk and new wave. Hell, I even began getting into folk. I was transfixed with the Box Boys. I wasn't into dancing, but that music just made you want to move around. Sadly, I was gone from the area for many years, and every once in a while I'd attempt to find out what ever happened to it. Thanks to the internet, I got to re-visit this tonight. A friend took us the first time and we got hooked on reggae and ska. We weren't mods but we just loved that beat. We would be sweating like pigs by nights end! Just a great, positive vibe there.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1134969481939975509.post-90035679791206348002018-07-10T21:06:14.361-04:002018-07-10T21:06:14.361-04:00Just saw this and was searching for info on the sk...Just saw this and was searching for info on the ska club I used to go to with my girlfriend, now wife of 30 years. It was the early 80s and we'd drive from Palos Verdes to see The Untouchables and all the great bands there. Our parents never knew, which made it even more fun! One friend even had a Vespa scooter (I remember you Oscar, aka Oh Ska!). Such great times in L.A. with an incredible music scene, from the pop dance bands (Go-Go's) to X, Black Flag, and our beloved ska bands.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1134969481939975509.post-48672654357403792892017-10-11T02:19:27.603-04:002017-10-11T02:19:27.603-04:00I started going to the ON Klub around '83/'...I started going to the ON Klub around '83/'84 or so (my first time was to see Fishbone). There was a band called Rebel Rockers who seemed to be almost like the house band around that time. They were kinda like the Clash with more reggae. I've driven down Sunset numerous times recently and always tried to figure out where it used to be, and now I know, thanks to this essay.Stevehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00549120808667715777noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1134969481939975509.post-54371383720329124402017-07-27T13:41:16.642-04:002017-07-27T13:41:16.642-04:00I was there. We also liked new wave, surf, and humor.

Besides the The O.N. Klub, I remember HJ's (aka The Orphanage), Madame Wongs, Lhasa Club, and the The Music Machine, as places to play. We were barely in high school and had to hide backstage at over 21 places, when we weren't performing. My band eventually followed the branch that grew into the Greg Shaw/Cavern Club/Garage/psych scene.

I don't really remember any L.A. mod bands being very good. The Untouchables were nice guys and jumped around on stage a lot, but they never made an impression on me, musically. I really liked the interracial aspect of the mod scene. It was mostly white, but I remember a lot of black and Asian mods. I think some of the skinheads were too stupid to know they were so supposed to be belligerent, racist, shitheads, at first. In 82 there weren't a lot of Ska bands. The Untouchables, and The Targets, and these kids Stereotypes. There were a lot of Power Pop bands. The Question were my favorite. I remember the place across the street had a sign that read En Vivo Transvestistas. I had to have my Mom fill out a permission slip to do that gig.
